The Department of Middle Eastern Studies invites you to a lecture by Ehsan Abdoh-Tabrizi titled Chasing Shadows: The Islamic Republic of Iran´s Quest for Alliance with Russia.
Since the days of the Soviet Union, the Islamic Republic of Iran has persistently sought a close partnership with Russia, but this obsession has proven costly with limited gains. Despite the Islamic Republic’s continued aspirations, the likelihood of such an alliance remains low. However, War in Ukraine has the potential to become the basis for its realisation. This presentation analyses and contextualises the subject within the framework of Iran-Russia relations, examining the dominance of ideology over realism in the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Through a comprehensive examination, we explore the intricate dynamics shaping the interactions between Iran and Russia, shedding light on the influence of ideological factors in shaping foreign policy decisions within the Iranian context.
