Department of Middle Eastern Studies and Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences invite you to next installment of the Middle East Lecture Series!

Dr. Merouan Mekouar (York University) will give his lecture on the topic of Drawing the Wrong Lessons: Morocco and the ‘Economics of Ignoring’ on Thursday, 21 November 2019, 17:45 at Jan Palach Square 2, room 300.

Poster: MELS Merouan Mekouar

Abstract:

The lecture will examine the logic of Moroccan authoritarianism since the independence of the country and will show that that the traditional historical-institutionalist explanations do not fully capture the logic of authoritarian resilience in the country. Relying instead on rational choice explanations, the presentation will show that the resilience of the Moroccan regime is due to the adoption of neo-liberal reforms in the mid-nineties which have altered the calculations of the local business and political elite and aligned their interests to those of the Moroccan monarchy.
