Middle East Movie Nights: Caramel

Join us for the next instalment of the Middle East Movie Nights series!

Film: Caramel (2007).

Introduced and Moderated by: Ebru Akcasu and Michal Láznička (Turkology, Department of Near Eastern and African Studies).

Summary: Is Caramel something sweet or is it also something that inflicts pain? A simple recipe with a few basic ingredients can create an edible treat and function as a depilatory. Caramel can therefore become a symbol of having (at times, unquestioningly) become accustomed to tolerating pain for the sake of conforming to society’s expectations of how and what a woman ought to be. Come join us in exploring how Nadine Labaki’s film interprets Caramel by following the struggles and pleasures of a complex set of female characters whose stories are connected through a Beirut beauty salon.
